"Decisions Determine Destiny"

Just how powerful are we? What if I told you, WE are the architects of our lives? Immensely powerful. Choices.

The course of our lives is chartered by the choices we make. That’s it. We make choices, we face outcomes, we make more choices.

Of course we all want the outcomes of our choices to be in line with our goals, dreams, and visions of what our lives are meant to be. But, we also know, we don’t always get the outcomes we want. How can we better equip ourselves for the next choice? How can we better anticipate those outcomes and prepare to respond accordingly? How can we learn to take what appear to be undesirable outcomes and use them as tools to sharpen us?

All of this and more as this week we look at the power we have through the choices we make.

1. Choose A Faith System

Every single one of us believes in something. Our belief system doesn’t have to be religious, or even spiritual in nature. It could be in the science behind the world we experience. It might be the belief in the love of those closest to us. In fact it could be a combination of many things. The bottom line is that as we are faced with choices to make, ultimately, our value system and what we believe in will drive the direction we go.

I’ve certainly found my place, my center of balance, through scripture. As I am faced with those dilemmas:  choices that appear to have to no good option, I have relied upon my faith in the Lord, and the lessons he so lovingly gave us through his life. To this point, this faith has served my family and I well and I know will continue to do so.

There’s little more personal to us as individuals than our faith system and that which speaks to our souls. Take some time, really get acquainted with your soul and what calls to you. Then run with it, man! Run with the wind behind you and the world ahead. With that foundation, you can’t choose wrong!

2. Don't Choose Entitlement

If we believe that we do make choices and the choices we make are within our control, then we must be accountable for the outcomes of those choices.

We may feel disadvantaged or that our situation is particularly unfair. I get that. We don’t all come from the same starting point. Sometimes folks use this analogy of running a 100 meter race with some people born 50 meters down the track. That sucks!

You know what sucks even worse? When the gun fires and the race begins, just standing there or walking off the track. Not participating because “it isn’t fair.” That is our choice. That is where entitlement will get you.

Life isn’t about the most advantaged people probably going to win the race and therefore none of the rest of us should even bother running. No! The championship life is about taking what you have in the place where you are – WHEREVER YOU ARE – and taking control of the next choice. It is an affirmation that you, me, and we EARN what we get. No one is going to look out for me, or you, for us. We must choose accordingly.

3. Choose To Be Your Best

All we can do is all we can do. As individuals that will certainly manifest itself differently based on god-given talent, the goals we set, and the environment in which we live. For example, I may never be Lebron James on the basketball court. But if I’m on the court playing, I can choose to put out my very best effort. And no one, not even Lebron himself, can stop me from doing that – even if I never score a basket.

Even if we don’t close the deal in our business, even if we don’t get whatever result we were working for, NOTHING in this world can prevent us from choosing to give our best in that moment in time. Only WE as individuals have the power to do it. We choose to give something less than our best. We live with that choice.

Only we know what our best is. No one can determine that for us. And when we don’t give our best, it is we who feel guilty; we who carry the burden of “what could have been?” We feel that shame.

When we do give our best, win, lose, or draw, we hold our heads high and learn the lessons. We dust ourselves off and we choose to do our best all over again.

4. Make The Choice (Don't Be Indecisive)

Indecision is usually driven by fear. Fear of making the wrong choice. But fear is paralyzing. If life is a journey, then it requires we keep moving. Paralysis, then, is antithetical to our getting the most out of the life we are given. Champions we will never become.

We all have those moments of feeling uncertain. The doubt creeps in and we question everything, mostly ourselves. This is when we must recall our faith system. The trust we have in that foundation will provide the metaphorical springboard from which we will bounce back. We will recognize our power in choosing and our power to correct should we choose wrong.

Sometimes we choose wrong. Sometimes we make mistakes. But mistakes are only losses if we fail to learn from them. We apply whatever we learn to the next choice. We get better. We proceed. We progress. But this is only made possible by us not allowing indecision to rule. Be brave. Be bold. Be ready to adapt. But above all, be decisive!

5. Choose A Positive Attitude

“Life is 10% what happnes to us and 90% how we respond.” Yes, it’s become a cliché in self-help circles but as with all clichés, they gain their popularity because we recognize the truth carried within the statement.

We can’t control everything, we know that. I would never suggest otherwise. What I will tell you is the bad attitude we CHOOSE (and yes our attitude is a choice) will hurt us, hurt the people around us, and ultimately prevent us from becoming all that we were meant to become.

I recently read something that described anger as “holding a hot coal with the intention of someone else getting burned.” I like that. But I like it with regard to all our negative attitudes. Anger. Jealousy. Self pity. Grudges. Hatred. All of these burden us. All of these, like anchors around our necks, pull us down and may even drown us.

No matter what that 10% of life that we can’t control is; no matter what those things are that happen to us; we must focus on the things we are grateful for: health and wealth. And I don’t simply mean financial wealth. I mean a wealth of love, of spirit, of hope, and of audacity.

Find the audacity to love fearlessly, to practice your faith fearlessly, to reject entitlement fearlessly, to be your best fearlessly, and to respond to the outcomes, in your favor or against you, with fearless positivity.

Choices. We have the power.

Thank you for following along all week as we dove deep inside the power we each have to take control of our lives and determine our destiny!

Personal Empowerment vol. 1 “Disease of Success”

March 22, 2018 |by vchamp | 0 Comments | personal development

"Disease of Success"

What are the life attributes that hinder, block, or kill our progress;
our opportunities; our achievement; or us becoming the best version of ourselves?

Disease. Sickness. Illness. The body is a beautiful thing. You know, when any of these invaders, these parasites who wish to do us harm, get inside our system, we have natural defenses to attack. We strike back. Our white blood cells form like soldiers, like Voltron (hoping some of you remember those days), and proceed to kick major butt in the battle of our health.

However, we are more than just bodies: physical flesh and blood. We are minds. We are souls. We are beings with dreams, goals, aspirations and inspiration. And all of these things determine our course. We believe that if we stay the course, following our dreams, pursuing our goals, we will achieve success. But just like our bodies, the parts of us that control or manage our goals are susceptible to attack.

Unfortunately, our physical, bodily defenses are useless in this battle. We need to be mindful of our surroundings and keenly aware of the forces seeking to damage our psyche and knock us off our course.

These invaders, these viruses and parasites are what I refer to as the “disease of success”. These are the things that keep us from becoming all that we can be and prevent us from growing into the person we want to become. I’ve identified five (5) different forces actively working against us. These are areas I’ve found getting in the way in my own life. I don’t think I can provide every answer for every reader, but maybe as you continue reading, you say, “man, I know exactly what you mean!” And we can then move forward together.

1. Comparing Yourself To Others

Better car. Better house. Better spouse. The list of things that we use to compare our situation to our neighbors, or friends, or family is really endless. Social media like Facebook and Instagram make the comparisons easier and more profound. Thinking someone is doing better than us doesn’t just steal away some joy from our day, it can lead to deep depression.

Like a virus, this reflex to compare gets inside our brains and makes itself at home like a group of squatters in an abandoned house. Don’t leave your mind unattended. Pay attention. If you catch yourself making comparisons, think of the things in your life you are grateful for. Think of the things that bring you joy. Then direct your focus on them. Devote yourself to the positive things that you do have and watch them grow and watch you prosper.

I’m not saying it’s easy but I am saying if we are aware that we’re doing it, we can more effectively stop ourselves. We can be the team of white blood cells. We can defeat that disease.

2. Hanging With The Wrong Crowd

On this journey called life, not everyone we meet, heck not even everyone we are related to is going to be on the same path. They may not even be moving, or even worse, they may be moving backwards.

They’ll try to pull you in their direction. Misery loves company. Struggle loves companionship. We all struggle. But we don’t all have to buy a couch, new TV, kick off our shoes and get comfortable there. You, me, and we have places to go. We have successes to achieve. The people we choose to spend our time with will have a tremendous impact on our ability to reach those goals. Choose wisely.

If you must, don’t be afraid to cut people off, cut people out, and keep it moving. We must do what is best for us. Self love, baby.

3. Negative Self Talk

Stop. Me. If. You. Have. Heard. This. Before. You are you’re own worst critic. I knew it. You didn’t stop me because you know it’s true. We have enough trouble fighting off those external diseases. But at least with those, we can identify them as outside our existence and go to work defeating them. What do we do then when the disease is self-inflicted?

We have to first understand the why. Why are we so hard on ourselves? Why do we treat ourselves so poorly? Why do we let ourselves talk to us in ways we would never allow another to get away with?

We have qualities as people that other people love. We are lovable. Identify those qualities that others do love about us and use them as the foundation to love yourself. Loving ourselves helps us understand that we deserve what we aspire to. We deserve the success we are chasing. We deserve forgiveness for the times we came up short. Once we allow ourselves to be who we are, and love ourselves for it, we can overcome that negative internal dialogue. Let us shine!

4. Diet. What Are You Feeding Your Body?

The food we put in our bodies can provide the nourishment we need for our bodies and our mind. It can also be the poison that kills us daily. Little by little. This is why it’s so important that we choose what we eat wisely.

Have you ever sat down to a big meal, so delicious? Of course you have! The food prepared with love, calling your name. And we eat those meals, enjoying the time and love and company that is sharing the moment with us. Food brings us together, no doubt. It’s a unifier.

But, did you ever notice how you’re not exactly your most energetic after those meals? You aren’t exactly ready to grab success by the horns; unless of course success is a recliner and a nap.

I’m not here to tell you what to eat or what not to eat or not enjoy food. I’m simply telling you to be aware that what we eat affects how we approach the day and could be another obstacle in our way. An obstacle that we have ultimate control over.

5. Inactivity

In my conversation with sales professionals aross the country, I’ve heard the phrase “motion creates emotion.” If a salesperson feels down or lethargic, often just standing up at their desk and moving is enough to jolt them back into focus.

“Coach V, are you saying don’t ever rest?” No! Not at all. Think of your muscles when you workout. To grow and get stronger, they tear, they, hurt, they’re leaving their comfort zone. To take advantage of the work you put in, rest is necessary. To heal. Your personal and professional development is the same exact way.

Our championship lifestyle, that we hope to instill and live by every day, requires us to rest. Reflect. Recover. But the rest only works after the periods of action. So get active. Be active. STAY ACTIVE!

Thank you for following along all week as we dove deep inside the factors, both internal and external to ourselves, that can block us on our journey to becoming all that we can become and fulfilling all that we are destined to do.
